Staying Healthy on the Road

So I’m going on a road trip this weekend to Montreal with a couple girl friends. I haven’t perused Montreal nearly as much as I’d like so I’m pretty excited.

I’m also thinking that I need to plan well so my health regimen doesn’t get too far off track. I’ve been pretty consistent lately making sure I have green juice every day, not eating after 8 pm (at least 2 hours before bed), avoiding processed and refined foods (white flour, sugar, packaged foods), and eating mindfully (rather than on the go, while working or in front of the tele).
When traveling, trying new foods, and exploring new places, it’s completely natural to treat yourself to a little more than you normally would (and you should!).I definitely want to enjoy myself and have a good time.

So instead of stressing about it all, I put together a small list of things that will ensure I return in fairly decent shape:

1-Leave the car at the hotel and walk as much as possible – Keeping a healthy dose of movement/activity in the day helps our body maintain optimal health by increasing blood and lymph circulation, maintaining balanced blood sugar levels and bring fresh oxygen to our cells and tissues (amongst many other important functions)

2-Pack nutrition to take with me – While I know my friends will want to go out and eat together, I’ll still bring a thermos of green juice and a thermos of smoothie packed with healthy protein and fats, and then simply eat smaller portions at the restaurant such as a salad vs a heavy plate as I typically would (what can I say, when I’m away from home my instinct is to eat like a bear – not knowing when or where the next meal will be). Bringing raw nuts, seeds and some dates is also a great travel snack packed with healthy fat, protein and lots of vitamin and minerals.

3-Carry a water bottle – when you’re on the road it’s hard to remember to stay hydrated, but dehydration can quickly wreak havoc on your mood and energy levels.

4-Get some head space – Just 10 minutes of meditation in the morning can set the tone for a spacious and relaxed mind to make the best out of all the experiences your day will bring. Download the free headspace app and try one of their 10 minute guided meditations.

5-Bring an eye mask and ear plugs for a sound sleep – Getting a less than stellar sleep is an invite to unbalanced hormones, incomplete healing time for your body and setting yourself up for cognitive short comings.

6-Be flexible and adaptable – Let’s face it, things don’t always go the way we want them to when we’re on the road. Rather than struggle against things that are beyond our control, why not use these unpredictable events as opportunities?

Remember the 80/20 rule—it’s especially important while travelling. I intend to stay 80% on track! I hope these ideas help you to stay healthy during your next trip.
