It’s Cherry Season, and here’s why you should be eating them

The unofficial mantra of a Holistic practitioner is to help guide people towards eating live, natural, good quality foods. That includes buying fresh, local organic foods as much as possible. And guess what? Cherry season is among us! Grab yourself a pound or 2 and enjoy their sweet juicy goodness along with all of their health benefits.

Cherries are a nutritionally dense fruit rich in:

  • Anthocyanins (antioxidant, anti-inflammatory & anti-viral)
  • Quercetin (lowers inflammation & reduces allergies)
  • Hydroxycinnamates (antioxidant, reduces glucose absorption & modulates gut hormone secretion)
  • Potassium (helps muscle contract, regulates body fluids, transmits nerve impulses & lowers blood pressure)
  • Carotenoids (strong antioxidant with cancer-fighting properties, lowers inflammation)
  • Melatonin (natural sleep aid, reduces chronic pain, strengthens immune system)

In simpler terms, cherries are especially helpful for:

  1. Helping your body detoxify
  2. Reducing inflammation
  3. Promoting weight loss
  4. Improving sleep patterns
  5. Boosting heart health
  6. Treating gout
  7. Arthritis pain relief

The cherry trees are actually difficult fruit trees to grow and keep alive because they don’t tolerate wetness; they’re susceptible to several viruses, as well as different variations of rot, hence their hefty price.

They can be added to oatmeal, yogurt parfaits, salads, desserts, drinks and smoothies. They can also be eaten plain, of course! The cherry season is short, so thankfully cherries freeze well. They can also be dehydrated for future use in oatmeal’s or granola/protein bar recipes.
